David the Good, I hate you. I've always put off starting a garden because what I really want to grow "won't grow" in my range - now you've gone and destroyed that excuse. Furthermore, don't you know that gardening books aren't supposed to be fun to read? Come on, man - get it together."Push the Zone" is the 3rd book of a series but can be read as a stand alone. I won't give any spoilers, but Mr. the Good describes many methods that he has researched or attempted to grow plants outside of their recommended range. Since he approaches gardening as an experimenter, he also gives examples of what didn't work so well for him, and along the way he discusses ideas that he thinks might work but hasn't personally attempted yet. He gives suggestions on how to improve conditions within a greenhouse for zone pushing, as well as discussing the conditions to look for when deciding where in your property to prepare and plant warmer-zone plants for the best chance of success. The final chapter provides a discussion of how to care for a lengthy list of particular plants.If a gardening book can be said to be hard to put down, well this one makes that list. Even if you never had the urge to pick up a shovel, you will probably still enjoy reading it. If for no other reason, David is an encourager, exhorting us to go out and try something even when we've been told that it's impossible. Maybe it is, but maybe it's just improbable instead.After some reflection, David, I take it back. There are a lot of good tips in here! It focuses on tropical plants in the warmer states, but you can apply the techniques in colder areas, and even plants intended for colder areas in warmer ones. Matter of fact, I have peas growing now in San Diego that haven't been fried by the sun because they're hidden under some pumpkin plants. Using taller plants as cover was one of the tips.Also, check out David the Good's youtube channel for some good advice and sick beats. Compost your enemies!

Although I live in Temperate Climate Zone 5B, and David The Good writes about his experiences raising Southern-Florida tropical plants in cooler zones as far north as Tennessee, the information in this book explains clearly and in a very readable style, that extrapolates well to my Milwaukee yard. I've been blessed to be gardening in a space that is protected from the wind gusts by a brilliant and beautiful 4' brick-block fence that's topped with vertical wood slats, spaced with a 1"-gap between boards. This creates a micro-climate where the afternoon sun warms the bricks, giving the soil both an early- and late-season warmth-advantage, while protecting annual vine vegetation from otherwisw uncontrollable gusts. Now I have a much better idea of how to apply this and other planting/growing strategies. Thank you, sincerely, David.

Always learn something, but I would learn more with,say a free donut, can coozy or something for every....5th book?Good book, learned a few good tidbits, was even reading this when we had our late March dip into the 20`s.....used the rain barrel idea and saved my new citrus plants.

David's garden books are tops! His fascination with learning techniques from other cultures and working them into simple and practical gardening practices are gems. As with all of his books, he includes a generous dose of good natured humor in a way that only he can deliver. When it reached the Supreme Court in 1919, the case of Jacob Abrams and four other Russian-Jewish immigrant anarchists who were convicted and eventually deported in 1921 became a precedent-setting test of the First Amendment. In an impressively researched and comprehensive summary of this extraordinarily complex case, Polenberg, author of One Nation Divisible, focuses on the Supreme Court's "clear and present danger" criterion determining limits of free speech, and the reasoning behind the dissents of Justices Holmes and Brandeis, which continued to influence the extent of freedom of expression until the 1969 adoption of the broader "likeness to incite" lawless-action interpretation of the First Amendment. The author recalls the motives that led the individual immigrants to espouse anarchism and what they suffered for their beliefs. He also compares U.S. surveillance, headed by the young J. Edgar Hoover, and prison conditions with the violent confrontations and more brutal treatment to which anarchists were subjected in Russia at the hands of the Cheka (and later PGU) secret police, which disillusioned even such staunch American radicals as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Many Civil War buffs have called the battle of Chancellorsville Robert E. Lee's greatest victory; Stephen W. Sears doesn't necessarily agree, and in this painstakingly researched book, he offers ample evidence that Lee had luck on his side in the battle. Lee was a great general all right, and his men did fight savagely. But the notion that Union General Joseph Hooker was inept is cast into doubt by Sears, who descibes the action of Chancellorsville as most great battle books do--hour by hour. This book is the finest rendition of the battle yet and an interesting thesis for Civil War discussion. Lee's penchant for aggressiveness and his faith in his troops as unbeatable may have worked at Chancellorsville, but Sears argues that these alone couldn't win the war. Lee learned this lesson too, a month later at Gettysburg.

Chancellorsville was one of the Civil War's pivotal campaigns, a great victory for the South that, however, led directly to the death of top Confederate general Stonewall Jackson. It hasn't generated the amount of literature devoted to most major Civil War battles, largely because John Bigelow's 1910 classic, The Campaign of Chancellorsville, seemed for years to offer the last word. But Sears, employing a mix of published and unpublished primary accounts to buttress secondary studies, manages to offer more than one new word in a thoroughly engaging text. Most notable is his use of Union military intelligence reports to show how General Joseph Hooker was fed a stream of accurate information about Robert E. Lee's troops; conversely, Sears points out the battlefield communications failures that hampered the Union army at critical times. He also examines the roles of Hooker and his corps commanders, finding that half of the latter badly served their commander in the campaign. On the Confederate side, Sears analyzes Lee's faulty intelligence and his relationships with his subordinates. Throughout, he highlights Lee's marvelous good luck, as well as his army's fighting capability. One of the book's three appendices explores several of the battle's "romances"?e.g., Jackson's wounding, Alfred Pleasonton's false stories?while two other appendices present orders of battle and casualties. Sears turns his formidable skills from General George McClellan (To the Gates of Richmond, Ticknor & Fields, 1994) to "Fighting Joe" Hooker and the last great battle in which Napoleonic-style tactical offense prevailed. Sears's almost hour-by-hour account of soldiers under fire will confuse some, but close readers will find a stunning analysis of how terrain, personality, chance, and other factors affect fighting and distort strategic design. Sears offers new information on the "modern" intelligence gathering of the Union Army, refutes many old "romances" of Chancellorsville, especially the one that Hooker lost his nerve, and adds vital details to both commanders and battle movements. He also shows that Hooker, more than McClellan, made the Army of the Potomac into "the finest army on the planet"?one that survived bad generalship and Robert E. Lee's aggressive moves at Chancellorsville. Sears also reminds us that "character" and "will" count for much in war.
