Good book for students of stitching, embroidery and the role of women's work in the early days of stitch and embroidery

This book is important and fascinating. It is an important piece of art history, as well as the history of embroidery. It never seemed to me to be dismissive of the medium and said instead that what women did in the past was eventually denigrated by others, e.g., the guilds, church officials (not the author). This book is a part of the reinstatement of women's place in art history, as well as fiber/needle arts.I say it is fascinating because I am very interested in how people lived and created art, throughout time. And it is of interest because it tells what happened to a beautiful art form and how it became devalued by a mostly male-controlled art world, except in certain settings.There are other books to read about the subject, that will round out the appreciation of needle arts, including "Embroidered Textiles" by Sheila Paine. I have read dozens of books on this subject, including books on the tools of the trade, ancient and new.I embroider and I vote, so I vote this book "excellent".

As an AVID embroiderer and feminist, I had see this book often over the years but had never gotten around to reading it. Ugh. Terrible! I want my money back.The nicest thing to say is that it is very dated, and for the time, it was probably important. I just found it to be a very bad, boring, repetitive study that really doesn't say much. She really just says the same thing over and over and over: Embroidery has "signified" femininity through the ages. That's about it, folks. Well, we learn that sometimes this has been an empowering thing, but mostly it has been a way of keeping women in their place and submissive, etc. Occasionally women have rebelled against it. That's really it. That is it. I don't think I read more than three chapters though I scanned the rest.What I found so offensive is that Parker is clearly not an embroiderer herself, doesn't know anything about the medium, and really couldn't care less about it. I was amazed at how totally insensitive and dismissive of it she is. It is the subject of her book after all. But her attitude is pretty much of a distanced, "scientific" observor reporting on something she had absolutely zero knowledge or understanding of herself.If you are an embroiderer, do not look to this book to tell you anything. I learned zilch except maybe a historical fact or two. A really good book about women and embroidery has yet to be written.

If you've ever looked at samplers or thought of the ways in which needlework shaped the lives of women for centuries (mostly in the negative sense), you will enjoy this book immensely. Parker takes one of the central tasks expected of women in the 18th and 19th centuries and shows how women used needlework as an outlet to express feelings of dismay and dislike. It just goes to show you: where there's a will, there's a way.If you enjoy learning about women's lives in the past, and have either an interest or an aversion to needlework yourself, I think you will enjoy this most unusual history.

Wow, I'm impressed with this book. Fascinating, well researched and detailed history of women and embroidery. This is a must read for anyone, especially women, who embroider as their primary artistic expression. As an artist who is working within this medium to excavate and reveal the living present of misogyny, this book has enriched my understanding of the work I do. Highly highly recommended.

Dr. Suzanne Humphries deserves an award for bringing the load of vaccine record and history to a finely orchestrated; and lengthy, book.The parent of 4 children, I had never questioned vaccines before 2 of our children had a severe reaction to their shots at a joint appointment in which my daughter received her Kindergarten shots and our son (then not yet 3) received the shots required between 18m-3years, which was the DTaP & Hep A.Our son had immediate symptoms he wasn’t well but I was pregnant with our 4th child and thought he was just being a normal attention seeking kid. He kept complaining, “my legs.” And wouldn’t Assist when I carried him out and looked zoned out. When I put him down to walk himself he flopped and said he couldn’t and I assumed he was just babying it.He slept for three days straight which I called Abbie worried and they said it was Normal and then began a zoned out period in which he also lost control of his bowels, wouldn’t talk, seemed confused when asked anything and began to wAil and whine at every response. At the same time our daughter began to have manic behavioral symptoms, everything touching her she was frantic, couldn’t explain her thoughts before loosing her point and becoming irrational and angry, lost control of her Bowels and began complaining of back and leg pain so much she’d wake in the night screaming it hurt.Her reactions merited a few visits to the ER; one 4 days after the vaccine, in which each time they reasoned her symptoms away as a flu like symptom and didn’t think she had meningitis because she lacked some of the symptoms. I mentioned she had the MMR vaccine 4 days prior, so how could she have meningitis and they didn’t really answer me. It made me curious so upon a follow up the next morning my doctor didn’t really answer my question either, so I asked for some papers to take home to read on it and the shots, since Our son was still in lethargic/sick mode after his and she was very animated about his symptoms being normal. So much so it was overkill and I wasn’t incinerating his was abnormal, (he hadn’t lost his bowels or began any other behavior aside fromSleeping and being generally quiet and zoned out yet at that point).We began reading packet inserts online and I was appalled to see how many adverse reactions there could be. We decided to ask our doc again for information so we could make a rational choice seeing how our 4th son was to be born very soon ( he was born 14 days after their reaction), and one nurse said they had a nurse who dealt strictly with vaccine and medicine questions she’d send in to talk to me, but no one came. The next nurse I asked to remind them to get her looked confused like she had no clue who I was talking about. When my doc came in I asked her and she didn’t confirm there was any nurse and said she had papers I could have. When she came back she said the papers were from a book she forgot she loaned to another patient and hadn’t gotten back, but wasn’t able to tell me the name of it.It was way to many weird situations for us not to thing there was something there. As each kid got worse visits became shorter and no one Brothered to suggest we test anything, they just said it was normal and it happens at the age our son was at. He has since been diagnosed with Autism.Luckily for our newest son he has never been vaccinated and truly is healthy. He hasn’t had ear infections, respiratory issues like our other 3 children had. We read all the way through his first year, saying to ourselves, “ we’ll keep reading a little more then we can always get his vaccines next month after we know everything and can feel comfortable”The more we read the more we had to read more and more, and time just flew by, the literature we read along the way deterring us from vaccinating each time. He is now a year and a half old and runs, jumps off things, says over 40 words and has no allergies.We are happy with our decision and continue to learn as we are recovering our son from Autism with great success using diet, Dr Andy Cutlers Chelation Therapy Protocol and boosting his immune system so far and still weighing opinions for our daughter, who is still being looked at for issues that arose. So far she’s diagnosed with Emotional Disturbance Disorder, has a lot of set backs in her abilities in reading, so much so she’s in the lowest group now in school despite our nightly practice and teachers support. She has had several MRI’s, one of which we were refered to a neurosurgeon to correct nerve damage in her spine from the vaccine; although no one will admit it’s from the vaccine, not on paper anyways. It’s infuriating.Parents should all be informed of their doctors education on vaccine ingredients, reactions, law and vaccine approval processes.If they choose to vaccinate that is their choice, just like it is ours to no longer.Free from bullying, free from judgement, free from ignorance.Attached are images of some of the many books I’ve read that you may also find enjoyable. Emords book is extremely detailed, depressing in explaining specific laws and cases by which they were governed and very eloquent.

Stay with me--this IS about the book:Whenever I purchase anything from Amazon, I read every single critical review of a product prior to purchasing. This is a wonderful strategy for securing a superior product. Usually I get to the 15th - 20th negative review when I can qualitatively generalize the predominant complaint or common attribute of the critical population. For example, with a masticating juicer I am researching, I've noticed that critical reviewers hadn't read the proper cleaning instructions of the device, thus the most common complaint is one specific "failing" part. Now I REALLY want the juicer, because I have deduced that even the negative reviews are mostly positive ones, so long as you are able to read instructions and apply what you've learned... which a lot of folks seem to struggle with. I think this book is another clear example that this methodology is a best practice for finding a great book; it is a superb literature review of research that busts the "safe and effective" mantra. The critical reviewers are obviously taking to the comment postings with something to prove, or possibly dont understand literature review/what the book is intended to achieve, or are unconsciously defending their own irreversible parenting choices. If the question is "Did the authors provide a central location for threading together years of information that you'll never otherwise experience?" Then my five-star answer indicates : "Absolutely."Also, I have spoken to Dr. Humphries recently in a 2 hour wellness consult. I have never in my life been treated so respectfully. She truly is a wealth of knowledge and she will answer any questions you have about the book. If you are truly using this text to make a decision about whether or not to vaccinate your kids, I would suggest printing/copying what you find to be the "most well-grounded" critical reviews here, and address them with her directly via a consult. She will not get defensive and she will speak to you like a human being... which is a lot different than your local physician. Good luck getting more than 5 minutes with that doctor, and if they don't laugh in your face--that's a "success."If you actually read my entire review--> I hope your decisions and chosen path, whatever they may be, work out for the best for you and for your family. <3

This is a must read for everyone! After the first read -through, I had to put it away for a while. I felt duped by the medical establishment and the government. My whole world was based in medicine and what I read was a hard pill to swallow. I had to re-evalute everything I had been taught. I have read it in its entirety several times since and reference it on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis. Looking back, I can now see how uninformed/misinformed I was. Ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power. Knowledge can save your life. Had I read this before I got pregnant, I am positive that my son and I would not have suffered vaccine injuries and would not be dealing with the ramifications of injecting toxic substances into our bodies. I highly recommend this book!

The book itself is mostly OK, other than presenting opinion as fact and generalities as absolutes. The pre-tests and the tests (as part of the online content) are a dumpster fire. Bizarre wording, uncertain meanings, word flips that may or may not match up with the verbiage in the book; questions on stuff that, while enlightening, have nothing at all to do with professional diesel mechanics (seriously, who cares that it was Volta and not Galvani who invented the multicell battery?). Whoever wrote the book knows diesel inside and out. Whoever wrote the tests, on the other hand...

The background and details are explained in Chapter 1 of this publication where a step-by-step analysis procedure is given, and a three-story, one-bay frame example is solved entirely manually to illustrate application of the procedure. Chapter 2 of this publication is devoted exclusively to the detailed design of a 20-story reinforced concrete building that utilizes a dual system consisting of special shear walls and special moment frames for earthquake resistance. Modal response spectrum analysis is used as the basis of design. Design utilizing the Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure is also illustrated as a prerequisite to design using the Dynamic Analysis Procedure. A key feature of this example that would be of particular interest to users is the design of reinforced concrete shear walls by the procedure in the 2011 edition of ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete.

Reading Reflex is an exhaustive how-to guide for the reading instruction method they've developed called Phono-Graphix. Phonics and whole language take a beating here, with the authors accusing both methods of failing generations of would-be readers. Their approach, unabashedly touted as far superior, stresses the 43 sounds of the English language, treating letters as symbols of these sounds. Phono-Graphix teaches children to separate each phoneme in a word so that the phonemes can later be blended back in the right order. If this sounds familiar it's because the same method was heralded in 1997 in the well-publicized book Why Our Children Can't Read, by psychologist Diane McGuinness (Geoffrey's mother). Parents may find the first long chapter on the history and process of learning how to read a bit tedious and technical. But since each chapter--and the method--builds on these thoughts, it's a must to read the book from cover to cover. Harder still is accepting the McGuinnesses' claim that Phono-Graphix has a 100 percent success rate. Much of the research cited in their book seems to have been conducted by the authors themselves, with no indication of comparison groups or follow-up studies. In Reading Reflex, Carmen McGuiness outlines an approach to teaching reading that maximizes all of the positive aspects of phonics-based instruction while eliminating certain aspects of that type of instruction that students find confusing. Her approach recognizes that people 'make sounds', not letters, and that letters simply represent the sounds that already exist in spoken language. Additionally, the phono-graphix approach recognizes and teaches the English written code (both basic and advanced) in the most straightforward, common-sense manner that I've ever encountered.The first two chapters outline why the method works and how to implement it, and the following chapters provide detailed, systematic lessons for teaching reading using the phono-graphix method. The book is well laid out and easy to use. McGuiness' method is research-based and clinically tested. I have worked in education for 10 years, and I've recently moved from teaching Spanish to secondary students to teaching reading to elementary students. I was taught to read using phonics. I was taught to teach reading using the whole language approach. I have been teaching reading for the past year using a phonics-centric blend of those approaches. While I've seen marked growth in each of my students using a phonics-centric approach, I have also encountered many of the problems described by McGuinness (too many exceptions to the rules for phonics rules to be useful, confusion about which letter 'makes' which sound when in fact letters only 'represent' sounds, and confusion over the names of letters versus the sounds they represent. I have only just begun to use the phono-graphix approach with my students, but I'm excited to see how the implementation of the strategies outlined in this book will move my students forward in their reading ability. I will update in 12 weeks when I've fully implemented the principles in the book, but I'm confident that I will see significant growth in reading ability in each of my students by the end of a 12 week trial period.

I tutor students of all ages. I ordered this book specifically for a little boy I am working with from Haiti who was told he could not continue on to 2nd grade unless he improved his reading. The very first day that we used the techniques outlined in this book, my young student was able to read full sentences, and fluently. We called in his mother towards the end of our time, and he read to her: she nearly cried. I know I was wiping away some tears.It is this type of break-through that we as teachers live for.I so appreciate the step-by-step lessons this book lays out. I needed guidance to help this little boy quickly, and this book does it. The author also explains the science and philosophy behind the methods employed, and she makes total sense throughout. I am thrilled that I stumbled upon this!!

I've been working with my homeschooled 8 year old daughter, finally forcing her to learn to read, for a few months. We weren't concerned about her lack of reading before, just thought it would come with time. She was asking to learn to read, but every time I sat down with her, she would fight me. We recently had her tested by an education specialist who discovered some unspecific learning disabilities, and recommended a lot of different options, all very expensive. I researched all over the web and discovered Reading Reflex from the Phono-Graphix people, and was intrigued. We've been working through the book now for less than a month, are just finishing The Basic Code section, and it seems to have helped (that, along with an online reading program called Reading Eggs). I like the concepts in the book--they make a lot of sense. My older 2 children are excellent readers, and learned how to read using the Spalding Method in a charter school. I think Spalding is an excellent method, but think Reading Reflex applies similar concepts in a more holistic approach, ie. starting from what children already know, which is the spoken and heard lanquage, and applying that info to a written code (which makes little sense with all of the *rules* that are broken). Reading Reflex attacks the problem of reading, I believe, from the right angle, and I plan on using it to teach my younger children to read. If you can find it, I highly recommend buying a spiral bound version of the book. I photocopied all the pages I needed (on regular white printer paper on my home printer/copier), cut everything out, then laminated them all on my home laminator, and store them all in envelopes as directed. I also bought my recommended white board at Hobby Lobby for $4 (much better than the one I bought at Walmart made by Crayola for $10). Some of the recommended activities (games?) are not very fun for my struggling 8 year old. Some games we have improvised: our own Sound Bingo with more of the sounds she struggles with; a "Funny Words Game" where we draw from a pile 4 consonants and 2 vowels and see how many 3 sound words we can come up with, then she writes down the word on her white board; and we do the 3 Sound Auditory Processing activity with all the letters in the Basic Code with words I think of, instead of just using the little cards. I'm amazed at how many words there really are! Going through this experience has taught me how difficult it really is to learn to read, especially for one with dyslexia like my daughter (dyslexia=problems reading). I'm hoping Reading Reflex does the trick, but since she still struggles, I think we will likely also pursue vision therapy, and possibly Lindamood Bell, after I get her as far as I can. Another note: the book recommends that when you as the parent sit down with your child to teach him or her that you be very firm. I finally "laid down the law" and told my daughter to be obedient during our lessons, that I was the teacher, not her, and that it wasn't about having fun, it was about learning a life skill. She shaped up and we made a lot of progress that day, which in and of itself was FUN! Good luck!
